Still Life with Tornado

Author: A.S. King
Release Date: Oct. 11, 2016

Let me just get this out of the way: you need to read this book. “Me?” You ask, wondering if I’ve somehow acquired the power to stare through my screen directly into your currently reading eyes. Yes. You. It doesn’t matter who you are, because there is not a single person on the planet I would not recommend this book to. Family, prepare to be hassled as I thrust my copy into your arms. Children of Exile

This was my second book for ARC August, and it’s a good thing it was a quick middle grade read, because I was not impressed. When taking into account that Margaret Peterson Haddix is the author, it becomes even more depressing, because some of her earlier books remain longtime favorites of mine, including Running out of Time (1995), Leaving Fishers (1997) and Among the Hidden (1998). Try those. Not this.

The Fireman

Author: Joe Hill

Holy hand grenades, this book is good.

How good, you say? Good enough that I went out on a limb with a genre and author that were both new to me and checked out a nearly 750 page book off the library’s “sizzler” shelf, thereby presenting me with a 4-day checkout period, no renewals, and $1/day overdue fines.

Challenge accepted. Continue reading “The Fireman”

Croak

Gut Reaction Review
Author: Gina Damico

Lex Bartleby used to be a model child. Good grades, good friends, everything was good good good. But when Lex turned 14, something began to go wrong. Now 16, she is one visit to the principal’s office away from being expelled. Lex doesn’t know where the anger comes from, only that it manifests suddenly, unavoidably and violently. She steals, swears and has punched, bit or otherwise assaulted nearly every member of the student body.

Blood Passage

Gut Reaction Review
Author: Heather Demetrios

Fair warning: I did not like this book, so everything I say is going to be tinted by that. However, if you really liked Exquisite Captive (which I was in the A- range on) you will likely enjoy this book just as much.

Storm Siren

*Gut Reaction Review, Spoiler-Free*

Unfortunately, this book was not as good as I was hoping it would be. At first glance, it was pushing all of my buttons. X-Men-esque powers? Protagonist combatting a fierce power imbalance? Splash of fantasy? Stunning – STUNNING – cover? Checkity check.

But it just didn’t pan out for me. Continue reading “Storm Siren”

We Were Liars

Author: E. Lockhart
Spoilers Abound

I was thoroughly aware of the upswell surrounding this title upon its release, but only just picked it up for myself. Partially because I rarely go for contemporary fiction, and partially because I am a purposeful bandwagon avoider. It’s very quasi-hipster of me; refusing to join in something simply because the world is singing its praises. Upon coming off from my high horse, though, I quite enjoyed E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars.
